Walking Cricket

at Knaresborough Cricket Club

Do you ever look back on your younger sporting days, and wish you could re-live some of those
experiences? Do you miss being part of a group playing a game you love and enjoy discussing? Do
you just want to get a bit of exercise, out in the fresh air in the company of some like-minded
people? Do you want to try a new sport? Do you want to get the chance to play cricket at
Headingley?!

If the answer to any of these questions is yes then Walking Cricket could be just the thing for you!
Walking Cricket was developed in Yorkshire in 2019, as a sport for men and women, semi-retired
and older, where the emphasis is on enjoyment and meeting people. It replicates the game of
cricket, but with a lighter, softer ball, and light plastic bats on a smaller “Wicket” and with one
special condition – “No Running!” Everything is “walked”, including the ‘runs’ and fielding. No pads
and gloves are needed and all necessary equipment is provided.

Walking Cricket is ideal for people who are older, or less physically able, but who still want to enjoy
the thrill of the game. The game can be played with teams or just informally as a group.
Everyone playing gets to bat, bowl and field and it’s a great form of cardio exercise. In addition it can
maintain or even improve agility and hand-eye coordination.

Sessions last for up to two hours, with an hour to 90 minutes playing followed by some tea or coffee
and biscuits and socialising.

In September 2025 members of our group represented the club in a Walking Cricket ‘Festival’ at
Headingley Cricket Ground, playing several games on the hallowed turf! A similar event is being
planned for 2026.

At Knaresborough Cricket Club we will start Walking Cricket sessions in May, going through to the
end of the normal cricket season in September.

You don’t need to be an existing member of the Cricket Club to join us for a couple of initial taster
sessions. If you want to continue we would ask you to become a member at our very reasonable
rates.

Walking cricketers are generally over 55 years old, although exceptions can be made depending on
individual circumstances.
